Having a pool in your backyard is a great way to enjoy the summer months and create lasting memories with family and friends. However, owning a pool comes with responsibilities, and one of the most important is keeping it clean. Unfortunately, many pool owners make common mistakes when it comes to pool maintenance that can lead to costly repairs and even health hazards. Here are five common pool cleaning mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Not Skimming the Surface

Leaves,, and other debris can quickly accumulate on the surface of your pool, making it look dirty and uninviting. One of the most common mistakes pool owners make is not skimming the surface often enough. Ideally, you should skim the surface of your pool daily to prevent debris from sinking to the bottom and clogging your filter.

2. Not Brushing the Walls and Floor

Even if your pool looks clean on the surface, may be algae and other contaminants lurking on the walls and floor. Neglecting to brush your pool regularly can lead to these contaminants growing and spreading, making it harder to clean your pool in the long run. Aim to brush your pool walls and floor at least once a week, or more often if you notice buildup.

3. Not Testing the Water

The chemical balance of your pool water is crucial to keeping it clean and safe for swimming. However, many pool owners make the mistake of not testing the water frequently enough. Aim to test your pool water at least once a week, or more often if you notice changes in water clarity or smell. Use a pool testing kit to check the pH, chlorine levels, and alkalinity of your water, and adjust as needed.

4. Overlooking the Filter

Your pool's filter is responsible for removing dirt, debris, and contaminants from the water. However, many pool owners forget to clean or replace their filter regularly, leading to clogs and reduced efficiency. Aim to clean your filter at least once a month, or more often if you notice reduced water flow. If you have a cartridge filter, replace it every 2-3 years, or more often if it appears worn or damaged.

5. Adding Chemicals Incorrectly

Adding chemicals to your pool can be tricky, and many pool owners make the mistake of adding too much or too little. This can lead to imbalanced water chemistry, which can cause skin and eye irritation, algae growth, and other problems. Always follow the instructions on your chemical products carefully, and never mix different chemicals together. If you're unsure about how to add chemicals to your pool, consult a professional.
